This weekend I went home for my friend's wedding. I drove up on Thursday with my friend Rosalyn and her husband Braden. We wanted to get their early, so we left pretty early - 4am. Well, here goes the story. I was driving and we were in Idaho, about 20 miles north of a lovely little town called Dubois, which is in the Monida pass. The roads were super super icy. We drove up a hill which had a gradual slope on the other side, so we picked up some speed. I didn't want to hit the brakes for fear of sliding/spinning. The road had a curve to the left. As we were going around the curve we fishtailed, so I tried to correct it the other way and the car spun a 180 and we slid off the road backwards! We were going about 60-65 miles per hour. We slid for a bit, then almost came to a stop on the hill in the ditch, but we had enough momentum that we tipped over and landed on the top of the car! Seriously scary. We were all hanging upside down in our seat belts (luckily we were all wearing them!). That was a really weird feeling. I had always wondered what it felt like to roll over and hang upside down. Now I know :) Then we undid our seat belts and thudded on the roof of the car and made sure we were okay. Amazingly none of us were hurt. Miracle. The car, on the other hand, is pretty hurt. The windshield is cracked, the hood has dents and the top of the car has dents. It might just be a write off. But we are so so so glad we all walked away from it!
I call it The Perfect Crash because of the way everything happened. We were lucky there weren't any dry spots on the road, lucky there was snow so we could slide in the ditch, lucky people saw it happen, etc. Sounds ridiculous, but it was seriously the perfect crash.
It's easier to envision when you can kind of see what happened, so here are some pictures Roz took.

Lucky for us the people behind us had seen us crash and had already called 911 before we were even out of our seat belts. Ironically, the second car to pull up was the snow plough. I was like "ya, you would have been reeeeeally useful 2 minutes ago!" Haha. But he was really nice, made sure we were okay and let me sit in the cab of his truck to warm up since it was freezing outside. Then the sheriff came about 15-20 minutes later and took care of us, called the towing guy and we got towed to Dubois, Idaho where there is a water tower, a stop sign, and a gas station. That's it! We ended up going to Rexburg and staying at Rosalyn's Grandma's house for most of the day and Braden towed the car back to Utah with a Uhaul and tow dolly.
We are so blessed to have loving family and friends! My dad was kind enough to come down to Idaho and pick up me and Roz, then drive us back up to Cardston for the wedding (we drove all night, only pulling over for 2 hours to sleep), stick around while we took pictures (Roz was the photographer and I was a bridesmaid) and drive us back to Calgary. Dad, you're the best!!!! Thank you so much!
Thank you for all your phone calls, text messages, thoughts, and prayers. I feel so loved and I know we were definitely protected. Someone was watching out for us :)
